The long popular anime "Lupin III” will be turned into a live action film, out this summer.

The anime was created by Monkey Punch back in 1967, drawing from a number of inspirations, primarily from stories of the French novelist Maurice Leblanc, the main character Arsene Lupin III is in fact supposed to be the grandson of Leblanc’s character Arsene Lupin.  The borrowing actually led to a lawsuit, but Leblanc’s story itself was inspired by England’s Conan Doyle’s  “Sherlock Holmes”, and today Leblanc’s work is in public domain. The story of the master thief is set in Europe, but includes a wide range of influences including American comic Mad Magazine and the TV show Colombo. It also features a jazzy soundtrack by Yuji Ohno which remains very popular.  The new live-action version will be directed by Kitamura Ryuhei, star Shun Oguri (“Hana Yori Dango” and “Great Teacher Onizuka”) as Lupin III, Tamayama Testuji (“Nana” and “Casshern”) as Jigen, Ayano Go as Goemon, Asano Tadanobu (“Ichi the Killer”, “Zatoichi”,”Mongol”,  “Thor") as Inspector Zenigata and Kuroki Meisa (“Space Battleship Yamato”, “Crows Zero") as femme fatale Fujiko. The film debuts in Japan Aug. 31, and play in the States in 2015.
