Tommy february6 is one of several side projects (including the similarly named Tommy heavenly6) by The Brilliant Green vocalist Tomoko Kawase, with the curious name being a reference to the date of her birthday. While Kawase handles vocals for both projects, Tommy february6's sound is markedly different from that of The Brilliant Green, characterized by a heavy dose of 80s style synthesizers and peppy cheerleader-style vocals rather than the power pop hooks and tough/cute vocals for which The Brilliant Green is known. The look is different as well, featuring Kawase in cheerleader outfits, pigtails, and always in librarian glasses, making her welcome among multiple types of fetishists but also helping to make a clear distinction between this and other projects. The first single from Tommy february6, Everyday at the Bus Stop, came out in July 2001, just 6 months after The Brilliant Green's strong Los Angeles album was released. Packaged as a 2 disc set - CD+DVD single - the title song was used as the opening theme of the TBS program CDTV. Kawase's second single as Tommy february6, released in November of the same year and entitled Kiss One More Time produced more television deals, including a commercial for Sony's wildly popular robot dog Aibo. Her third single was released in January 2002. Entitled Bloomin'!, the title song prompted a tie-up with cosmetics maker Shiseido. The first full-length album from Tommy february6 was released, appropriately, the following month on February 6. The eponymous set was first released as a limited edition, which immediately vanished from retailers, debuting on the Oricon charts at #1, and remaining there for several weeks. The cover of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" included on the record was used in a commercial by automobile manufacturer Daihatsu. In March, Kawase put Tommy february6 on hold and got back to work with The Brilliant Green, which released The Winter Album in December 2003. On February 6, 2003, the fourth Tommy february6 single appeared. Entitled je t'Aime je t'Aime, the title song was used by Daihatsu for another spot, and Kawase was still batting a thousand. All over the media for the rest of the year and into 2004, including more singles that charted strongly and were picket up for promo campaigns, Kawase/Tommy february6 released her second full-length, Tommy airline in March 2004. Although Kawase and her projects continue to have tremendous commercial success, she has thus far avoided the overexposure and resulting fan attrition that most heavily hyped artists experience.
