Singer Songer was formed after Cocco got together with Quruli guitarist/singer Shigeru Kishida to re-record her track "Sing a Song - No Music No Life", a song that was originally licensed by Tower Records in their spectacularly successful advertising campaign in the late '0s, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the retail music chain. In addition to Cocco and Kishida, the band includes Quruli bassist Masashi Sato, along with keyboardist Hirohisa Horie and drummer Dai Taro, both Quruli support members. Although Cocco had officially "retired" from the music business by the time the Kyoto-based Quruli started making a major splash nationwide, Kishida participated in the recording of her one-off Heaven's Hell, a benefit for the beaches of Okinawa, striking up a friendly relationship with the famously reclusive singer. The two later formed the nucleus of Singer Songer, and after recruiting the other members the band debuted in an opening slot for Quruli in late 2004 to warm reception followed by high expectations for a record. Cocco, who left the music industry in 2001 after tiring of the constant pressure and attention that had been showered on her, appears to be much more relaxed this time around in her new role as band member. Kishida and his Quruli cohorts, who mix strong chops with a Pavement-like ability to play it loose when they feel like it, are perfect foils. The band's debut single "Shokarinrin", released in May 2005, was an instant radio and commercial hit, featuring a breezy melody line, ringing guitars, and Cocco's trademark emotive voice. Expectations remain high for their upcoming debut album, which will be released in June.
