Internationally recognized Japanese electro-punk singer Mu, born Mutsumi Kanamori, lives in Sheffield, England with her famed DJ/ musician/ remixer husband Maurice Fulton. The two hooked up at a club in Manchester, and were soon musically and romantically involved. Fulton grew up in Baltimore, and was DJing there by the age of 13. He started off playing hip-hop and garage, and later became part of the group the Basement Boys, where he contributed keyboard and drum tracks. He moved to NYC in 1996, and in 2000 relocated to Melbourne, Australia. Starting in 1990 he began playing in clubs all over the world, and collaborated with artists from various countries, including Finnish oddball Jimi Tenor. He is most noted for producing the worldwide dance club smash by Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman". He is especially well known in the UK, and Jockey Slut magazine dubbed him "Yankee King of Weird House". Mu, originally from Toyohashi, Japan, is a charismatic performer, a singer who is often boisterous, sarcastic, antagonistic, profane and just plain bizarre. She also punctuates her performance with accomplished, unusual dancing. Maurice on the other hand seems laidback, happy working on music and not anxious to bathe in the spotlight. Mu's debut album, 2003's Maurice Fulton produced
Afro Finger and Gel on the French Tigersushi label gathered rave reviews, and a number of publications called it the album of the year. Amongst the electronic hodgepodge were her shrieks, groans and accented English, delivering such songs as "Afro Finger" (about masturbation) and "Hello Bored Biz Man" (about her three month stint as a sex worker). However what really put her on the map was a
Double A side 12 inch single of "Paris Hilton"/ "We Love Guys Named Luke" (about The Rapture singer Luke Jenner), which was released on the hip UK label Output. Both cuts were hugely popular in clubs, and the original version became a highly sought collector's item, fetching as much as $250 at on-line auctions. She was featured on the cover of XLR8R magazine and hailed as a favorite by a wide range of artists, including Bjork. Mu's second album on Output in the UK and Beat in Japan, was released in early 2005, and entitled
Out of Breach (Manchester's Revenge). Amongst the tracks are "Tigerbastard" a rant against her former label, "Stop Bothering Michael Jackson", "Throwing Up" (a warning against alcohol abuse), and the synth propelled "Like A Little Bitch", as well as the cuts from her 12 inch hit. Mu has developed a strong cult following around the world with her eccentric and sometimes radical lyrics, and full- on electro sound. She performs actively, mostly in Europe, but has played in Japan in February and August of 2005.
