Cibo Matto is Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori, two Japanese girls based in New York. The group was formed in 1993, and soon demonstrated an intriguing ability to mix odd combinations of influences into song, primarily Suicide like minimalism, Brazilian pop music and hip-hop. The group debuted on indie label Bad News in Japan, but their international orientation and fan base led them to later sign with Warner Brothers. Yuka Honda (and is still) was romantically linked with sometime collaborator Sean Lennon, which further drew press interest in the group. However the group Does not seem to aspire to mainstream success, and spends much of their time on side projects, including recording in a side band with members of John Spencer Blues Explosion called Butter08, and working separately or together with other artists, including Gorillaz, Arto Lindsay, Caetana Veloso, Los Lobos, Yoshimi of the Boredoms, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Luscious Jackson, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Pizzicato Five's Maki Nomiya.
