The matching jumpsuits and spaceman shades immediately recall Devo, but Polysics pump out music in a bionic new wave punk style that has mutated into something uniquely their own. Founded in Tokyo in 1997 by guitarist and programmer Hayashi, the band gigged its way to the top of the "Tokyo New Wave of New Wave" movement, going through a series of lineup changes in the process. They released their first album,1st, on the UK Project label in 1999, gaining increased national exposure through a slot at that year's Fuji Rock Festival. Trimming down to three members, they dropped their second UK Project release, entitled ADSRM!, supporting it with a highly successful national tour the same year. The band headed for the United States in 2000, playing at indie mecca South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and following it up with a well-received club tour. After releasing several maxi singles, the band made the jump to the majors, releaesing the brilliantly manic Neu on Ki/oon Records. 2001 saw the inclusion of former support member Fumi as a full-time member, bringing the number of members to four and further honing the band's irradiated retrofuture vision. In addition to releasing their third maxi single in Japan, the band released best-of compilations in the US (Asian Man Records) and Korea (Pony Canyon Korea) to encouraging response.
