Singer Songer was formed after
Cocco got together with
Quruli guitarist/singer Shigeru Kishida to re-record her track "Sing a Song - No Music No Life", a song that was originally licensed by Tower Records in their spectacularly successful advertising campaign in the late '90s, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the retail music chain. In addition to
Cocco and Kishida, the band includes
Quruli bassist Masashi Sato, along with keyboardist Hirohisa Horie and drummer Dai Taro, both
Quruli support members. Although
Cocco had officially "retired" from the music business by the time the Kyoto-based
Quruli started making a major splash nationwide, Kishida participated in the recording of her one-off
Heaven's Hell, a benefit for the beaches of Okinawa, striking up a friendly relationship with the famously reclusive singer. The two later formed the nucleus of Singer Songer, and after recruiting the other members the band debuted in an opening slot for
Quruli in late 2004 to warm reception followed by high expectations for a record.
Cocco, who left the music industry in 2001 after tiring of the constant pressure and attention that had been showered on her, appears to be much more relaxed this time around in her new role as band member. Kishida and his
