Capsule | Profile

More of a lifestyle accoutrement than a band, Capsule creates music to complement the Eames chair in your corner and the Motherwell on your wall. The brainchild of composer/lyricist/designer/cinematographer/art director Yasutaka Nakata, and featuring charming vocalist Toshiko Koshijima, Capsule's music is cute, stylish, and all 21st century modern. Like Pizzicato Five, their most obvious influence, Capsule references bossa nova, sampler pop, house, jazz, and of course French pops. After several singles, Capsule released their first long-player High Collar Girl in November 2001. A string of singles and albums has followed since then, 2003's Phony Phonic and their 2004 manifesto S.F. Sound Furniture standing out among them. In 2003, Nakata started Contemode, his record label and vehicle for Capsule and other like-minded units. Like Capsule, the acts on Contemode exist to serve as accessories, and are often found for sale alongside high-priced, trendy clothes and knickknacks in Tokyo's hippest boutiques. In addition to making music with Capsule and running his label, Nakata plans events, DJs (often at events with stylistic brethren Karia Nomoto, Yasuharu Konishi, and others), writes for other artists, does design work, and in 2004 released a short film entitled Portable Kuko (Portable Airport).
