Boom Boom Satellites | Profile Bassist/DJ Masayuki Nakano and guitarist/singer Michiyuki Kawashima founded Boom Boom Satellites in 1990 while still attending university, taking their name from a Sigue Sigue Sputnik song. The duo's influences are quite wide, from David Bowie through Kraftwerk, Miles Davis and beyond. Their sound, fleshed out by additional players on stage, mixes rock and club music, and has sometimes drawn comparisons to Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers. Boom Boom Satellites' debut single "Dub Me Crazy" was picked up for DJ Fumiya Tanaka's Abstract Set One compilation, which helped them get signed to Belgium's R&S Records, who had previously signed Ken Ishii. The group also started getting praise in the UK from major music magazines like NME and Melody Maker. This led to Sony signing the band in Japan, and since then Sony has tried to maintain their international profile. Boom Boom Satellites played a techno festival in Belgium in 1997, and have played major festivals such as the UK's Glastonbury, Denmark's Roskilde, America's SXSW and Japan's own Fuji Rock. The band has also toured with a number of international acts, including Fatboy Slim in 1997, Underworld in 1998, and Moby on a three month tour of the United States in 1999. In 1999 they released their full album Out Loud, which saw critical and popular success. Their second album, Umbra, received mixed reviews, but kept their profile fairly high. Boom Boom Satellite have had a healthy presence in films, with tracks in the Luc Besson produced Yamasaki, in the Japanese film Ping Pong, and in the 2004 animated feature film "Appleseed", which was produced in Japan, and released worldwide. The Appleseed soundtrack put them in good company, as it also features music from Basement Jaxx, Paul Oakenfold, T. Raumschmiere, and Carl Craig. In the video game realm, Boom Boom Satellites have had their track “Fogbound” used in Ridge Runner 5, and music featured in Grand Tourismo 2. While the band remains signed to Sony Japan, they have lived much of the period between 2000 and 2004 in London. In March 2005 Boom Boom Satellites released a new album Full of Elevating Pleasures, and have planned an extensive Japanese tour to promote the album. by Keith Cahoon
